Servicio Para la Paz (SPP) coordinates safe, meaningful, affordable, and fun international service opportunities for volunteer groups. SPP utilizes a unique cross-cultural community development approach in which we equally honor a rich and genuine volunteer experience from local and international volunteers and the fostering of active citizens in the sustainable and collaborative development in our long-term partner communities.
After over 17 years of experience hosting international volunteers, we rebranded our cultural and service immersive volunteer program under a name that highlights its unique Dominican experience as Lluvia. Lluvia means:
Living, Learning, Uniting, Volunteering, Innovaating and Acting.
01
Community engagement
SPP volunteer programs only take place in communities where we have a strong presence and long-standing partnership. Our commitment to sustainability invites volunteers to experience local collaboration and be a short but valuable part of a much greater change in their host community.
02
Social justice
SPP specializes in sustainable community driven development centered around social justice issues. SPP is not simply a tourism agency or service provider. We are an international organization that works long term commitment to our partner communities. Typically, most of our volunteer groups will not be the first nor the last volunteers to pass through these host communities—though each group affects a unique, valuable, and significant positive change.
03
Reflection
SPP volunteer programs emphasize leadership development of both international and local volunteers. The programs also foster active citizens with tools for sustainable, effective local governance and community organizing. Our SPP team members are trained in leading reflective sessions, and in assisting volunteer groups leaders (when requested) in designing and facilitating a service- learning program component.
Sundays generally follow a no-work policy in the DR. The day is one for learning about and bonding with the community and might include a community baseball game or a visit to community homes.
