Why volunteer with us

A space to grow, serve and multiply

Volunteering at Servicio Para la Paz gives young people room to grow intellectually and personally, strengthen their organizing skills and their social awareness, and become multipliers who bring other young people into the development of the Dominican Republic.

Our work follows community-driven development: the people of each community make the decisions and lead every plan, and volunteers help make it happen.

  • Hands-on experience in real community projects
  • Training in leadership, planning and teamwork
  • An official volunteer certificate, valid for two years
  • The protections and benefits of Dominican Volunteer Law 61-13
  • A voice and a vote in the Volunteer Corps

DIY Local: young people who learn, lead and transform their communities

DIY Local develops the leadership of young people in Dominican communities and gives them the tools to become active citizens and agents of change. It is built on learning by doing: interactive workshops, teamwork and service build skills in leadership, communication, planning, sustainability and community participation.

From a problem to a solution

In the Youth Action Plan, participants identify a problem in their school or community and work in teams through key questions:

What is the problem?→Who does it affect?→What can we do?→What do we want to achieve?→What do we need?→How much does it cost?→How will we know it worked?

They design a small community initiative, plan activities, identify resources and volunteers, prepare a basic budget and decide how to measure results.

Learning by doing: rainwater harvesting

Participants join real projects, like our Rainwater Harvesting Project, installing systems with families and community leaders. The community becomes their classroom.

Where do resources come from?

Using real projects, we show how a need becomes a project: structuring an idea, preparing a budget, communicating a cause, finding allies and mobilizing resources.

The result

  • Identify community needs and design solutions
  • Lead teams and prepare basic projects and budgets
  • Mobilize resources and volunteers
  • Carry out community action and evaluate results
  • Multiply leadership and a culture of peace

DIY Local helps young people stop seeing themselves only as beneficiaries and start seeing themselves as leaders of their own communities' development.

Learn. Lead. Mobilize. Serve. Transform.
